This month is Blue September – New Zealand’s national awareness month for prostate cancer. It’s a time dedicated to shining a light on the most commonly diagnosed cancer for New Zealand men, and a reminder of just how many Kiwi families are impacted by this disease.
1 in 8 Kiwi men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. For many, that stat hits close to home; almost everyone knows a father, brother, husband, or friend who has faced the disease.
While survival rates are improving thanks to earlier detection and better treatments, the journey can still be long, stressful, and financially challenging. That’s where having the right insurance makes all the difference.
The reality of prostate cancer in New Zealand
- Every year, more than 4,000 Kiwi men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.
- In Kiwi men, prostate cancer is both the third most common cause of cancer death.
- While early detection plays a critical role in outcomes, many men put off regular checks.
For affected men and their loved ones, the diagnosis itself is just the beginning. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, or ongoing monitoring. Each path has its own costs – both financial and emotional.
Everyday household costs don’t pause for cancer
Beyond hospital visits and treatment, many families face the financial burden of time off work during treatment and recovery, as well as travel and accommodation expenses if treatment isn’t available locally. Families may also face additional medical expenses such as counselling, rehabilitation, or ongoing medications.
For some, these costs quickly add up to tens of thousands of dollars – at a time when financial stress is the last thing you need.
Why having the right insurance matters
The right insurance cover can provide peace-of-mind and financial breathing space if you’re diagnosed.
Types of policy that may be beneficial include:
- Health Insurance: For Kiwi men diagnosed with prostate cancer, health insurance can make a huge difference. It provides faster access to specialists and treatment, greater choice of drugs and procedures (including advanced options not always available publicly and non-PHARMAC drugs), and cover for private hospital care, monitoring, and follow-up. By easing financial pressure and reducing wait times, health insurance allows men and their families to focus on what matters most – getting the right treatment and supporting recovery.
- Trauma (Critical Illness) Cover: Provides a lump sum payment on diagnosis of a major illness like prostate cancer. This can help cover immediate costs, fund time off work, or pay for specialist treatment. It can also be invaluable if a patient has a spouse who gives up work to provide care.
- Income Protection: Ensures you continue to receive a portion of your income if you’re unable to work during treatment or recovery.
- Life Insurance: Provides financial security for your family if the worst should happen.
While each of these insurances plays a different role, the common theme is provision of cover that means you and your family can focus on what truly matters – recovery, time together, and moving forward – instead of worrying about bills.
Your insurance decisions should be tailored to your needs
Every man’s situation is different, and so is every insurance plan. The key is tailoring cover to fit your stage of life, your family, and your financial commitments.
An experienced insurance adviser can help you:
- Understand which policies are most relevant for your circumstances.
- Ensure you’re not under- or over-insured.
- Compare providers so you get cover that offers the best value and protection.
Two important actions to take
- Be proactive about prostate cancer: Prostate cancer is often highly treatable – but it needs to be found early. To avoid becoming a statistic, it’s vital to get checked regularly, be highly aware of symptoms that need investigation and, should symptoms appear, have them addressed quickly. Prostate NZ has excellent information about symptoms – you can find it here. If you have even the smallest suspicion, it’s worth seeing your GP.
- Get your insurance sorted: Prostate cancer is a reality for many New Zealand families. While we can’t control whether or not a diagnosis happens, we can prepare for its impact. Having the right insurance in place is one of the most powerful ways to protect yourself and the people you love.
